“You’re pretty for a dark-skinned girl.”

“Yes, I have flaws, but my skin tone isn’t one of them.”

In this book, eleven Black women share their personal experiences, positive and negative, with colorism. Black women who have been viewed as “privileged” for being a lighter hue express the issues they face in today’s climate. Similarly, more melanated Black women share the biases they’ve encountered and how they grew to love their skin. This work is to inspire every reader to appreciate the art and beauty of all shades of Black. We aim to encourage anyone who struggles with the emotional and psychological trauma that society inflicts because of their skin tone. You are beautiful, perfect, and wonderfully created.
